Pine wood accounted for 24.8% of total imported wood materials in the first 4 months of 2021.
According to statistics from the General Department of Customs, the import of raw wood in April reached 581,900 m³, worth $ 191.7 million, down 10.6% in volume and 3.6% in value compared to March. ; compared to April 2020 increased by 13.2% in volume and 22.8% in value.
Generally, in the first 4 months of the year, import of raw wood reached 2.4 million m3, worth USD 744.2 million, up 35% in volume and 37.3% in value over the same period in 2020.
In the context of the Covid-19 outbreak, Vietnam’s export of goods still grew well, in which wood and wood products were the key export products with high growth rate. The demand for wood materials for the production of wood products for export has increased, but the domestic source of raw materials has not yet been sufficient.
It is forecasted that the source of imported wood materials will continue to increase sharply in the third quarter.
Pine and ironwood are the most imported woods in Vietnam
In the first 4 months of the year, the import volume of large wood species increased over the same period in 2020 such as pine, ironwood, oak, oak, eucalyptus, incense, beech, spruce…. Meanwhile, the import volume of some types of wood decreased such as ash wood, Sapele, walnut, cypress, and cherry.
Pine wood accounted for 24.8% of the total imported wood material in the first 4 months of the year, reaching 545,800 m³, worth 120.9 million USD, up 83.4% in volume and 91.6% in value compared to same period in 2020.
Ironwood imports reached 132,700 m³, valued at USD 54.1 million, up 7.1% in volume and 14.3% in value over the same period in 2020. Import of oak wood reached 106,000 m³, valued at 53, 7 million USD, up 5.3% in volume and 13.9% in value over the same period in 2020.
Import volume of some other types of wood increased over the same period in 2020 such as Go wood increased by 17.6%; eucalyptus by 74.9%; Basswood wood increased by 76.8%; beech rose by 74.1%; spruce up 52.3%; rubber increased by 80.1%.
In contrast, ash wood imports in the first 4 months of the year decreased by 0.2% in volume and increased by 8.7% in value over the same period in 2020, accounting for 7.1% of total imported wood materials.
Poplar wood imports reached 124,200 m³, worth $44 million, down 17.1% in volume and 2.9% in value over the same period in 2020.
In addition, the import volume of a number of other types decreased compared to the same period in 2020 such as acacia wood decreased by 22.5%; walnuts down 27.8%; jellies decreased by 17%.
The average import price of wood materials in April reached 329.4 USD/m³, up 7.8% compared to March; 8.5% increase compared to April 2020. In general, in the first 4 months of the year, the average import price of this item reached 310.5 USD/m³, up 1.7% over the same period in 2020.
In the first 4 months of the year, the import volume of wood materials from major markets increased compared to the same period in 2020 such as the EU, China, Thailand, Brazil, Chile, New Zealand…. Meanwhile, imports from the US, Cameroon, Papua New Guinea, Malaysia and Russia are reduced.
